Some more about my career...

I've had an interesting career path - lots of twists and turns. But the common thread among each stop along the way is that I've always sought interesting, challenging problems. Usually, the company or the role enabled me to do that - oftentimes both. Admittedly, I've been pretty lucky in that regard.

Early in my career, I really focused on developing amazing products. I was able to do so by applying rigor and process. And after having achieved a reasonably high level of competence developing complex electro-mechanical systems, I began seeking new challenges. This naturally led me to managing larger, multi-disciplinary teams of engineers, scientists, designers, researchers and strategists. And more responsibility required budgets, financials, roadmaps, and org charts. It also meant supervising, leading, and motivating employees - not only when they reported to me, but also when the simply needed some guidance and support.

Turns out, I was pretty good at the management thing. So after upgrading some skills in business school (financial management, data models, decision-making, global leadership, marketing, strategy, and negotiations), I was confident to lead organizations. So, I did that too. Focusing in the consumer health space, I formed and led and grew companies. Some of those companies did well, some did ok, and some...well, some were just a mess. After a really brutal few startup years, I decided to take stock of what I liked doing. And, I decided that I really enjoy interacting with people. Doesn't matter if they're customers, colleagues, partner organizations, physicians, or aspiring entrepreneurs.

I'm perfectly at ease with ambiguity especially at the "fuzzy" front end of efforts. I organize thoughts about what needs to get done, by whom, in what priority, and then I'm confident enough to review those plans to course correct. I hold people accountable, provide honest feedback, and help them grow. I listen to customers and keep an open mind...always. I think visually. I'm most at-home sketching on a whiteboard (concepts, strategy, process flows, tasks, timelines, roadmaps, and occasional doodles.)

I like building things. Products, services, teams, companies.

Some more about me personally...

I've got an amazing family. I like them. I think they like me.

Have two hounds that are "energetic and friendly" (that's code for lazy and loud.)

Play in an over-the-hill soccer league, so Monday mornings I move a little slower.

Constantly renovating my 130 year old house (but not quite as quickly as my wife would like.)

Really, really like working. Gives me purpose, makes me happy, and I'm really good at what I do.

Drink bourbon because it pairs well with most everything.

Love traveling for work and play.
